Become a Peer Listener

Volunteer as a Peer Listener

We are excited to partner with HearMe to offer on-demand peer support for our community. The HearMe app provides a flexible and accessible option for those who may be struggling with life after loss, financial trauma, or just need an ear to listen to receive anonymous text-based support.

We can’t do it alone. We are seeking peers who have personally experienced the loss of a life partner and who are committed to providing emotional support to others. In addition, we will have a channel dedicated to financial wellness for volunteers with experience in personal finance and financial planning.

What is Peer Support?

As a peer listener, you will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone’s life by simply being there to listen based on your shared background and experience. Our peer listeners come from all walks of life but what they all share is a deep empathy for others who are navigating life after loss.

We provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to ensure that our peer listeners are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to give back to others. Peer support is not therapy and you do not need to be certified to volunteer as a peer listener.

Together, we can support each other through the difficult journey of loss and find hope and healing in the process. Join us today and become a part of our growing community.

How It Works

Please fill out the form below to apply. You will be asked to indicate which topic you are able to support and confirm your availability. A member of our volunteer team will be in touch to schedule a brief interview. Once approved, all volunteers will be required to complete training and onboarding with HearMe in order to start using the app. Read more about volunteer expectations below.

Volunteer Expectations

As a peer listener, you will be expected to show compassion and empathy towards those seeking emotional support. This means being patient, understanding, and non-judgmental.

Active listening is a key component of peer support. You will be expected to listen attentively to the person seeking support, ask clarifying questions, and provide thoughtful responses.

Maintaining confidentiality is crucial in peer support. You will be expected to keep all conversations confidential and not share any personal information about the individuals seeking support with others.

It’s important to establish and maintain boundaries in peer support. You will be expected to set boundaries around the types of support you can provide and to refer individuals to other resources, such as professional help or a crisis line, if necessary.

We provide comprehensive training to all of our peer listeners to ensure they are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to provide effective support. Additionally, we encourage our peer listeners to continue their learning and development through ongoing training and self-education.

Our peer support service is available 24/7, and we ask that our peer listeners commit to a minimum number of hours per month. We understand that life can get busy, but it’s important to be reliable and available for those seeking support.

Providing emotional support can be emotionally taxing, and it’s important for peer listeners to prioritize their own self-care. We encourage our peer listeners to take breaks when needed, practice self-care, and seek support for themselves when necessary.

By fulfilling these expectations, our volunteer peer listeners can make a positive impact in the lives of those seeking emotional support and help our community continue to thrive.
